Daily Right 10/2/09

*Garrison Keillor recommends cutting self-identified Republicans completely out of the health care system, providing them only with “aspirin and hand sanitizer,” in order to pay down the deficit.  But remember, it is “hard-right” that is using inflammatory, nay, even dangerous language in this debate.

*Obama’s French Lesson, by Charles Krauthammer.

“When France chides you for appeasement, you know you’re scraping bottom.”

Ouch.

*Here’s some more Polanski stuff:

-Polanski Controversy Shouldn’t Be Controversial, by Jonah Goldberg.

“His defenders don’t care. They are above and beyond bourgeois notions of morality, even legality.

And that’s the main reason I am grateful for this controversy. It is a dye marker, “lighting up” a whole archipelago of morally wretched people. With their time, their money, and their craft, these very people routinely lecture America about what is right and wrong. It’s good to know that at the most fundamental level, they have no idea what they’re talking about.”

-Sorry Leftism, You Don’t Get to Disown the Polanski List, by David Steinberg.

“The “Free Polanski” list is leftism’s monster, no matter how many leftists claim to disown it. No such list could ever be compiled by conservatism, classical liberalism, objectivism, or any other related creed built around natural law and it’s unalterable ethical code. Only leftism allows one to stand for Polanski, and another to stand against him, and both be definable as authentic believers of the philosophy.”

-Polanski and Hollywood’s Perverse Moralism, by Rich Lowry.

“Even the French government has tempered its initial reaction, describing Polanski as “neither above nor below the law.” That’s news to the film community, for whom Polanski is permitted at least one long-ago rape of a child in exchange for the glories of his art. Rarely has a class of people mustered a more damning indictment of its own putrid decadence.”
