this is a conversation on my facebook account from tuesday. my friend brad brings a good argument that we haven't touched on here. my contention was that it's insane that i can own an ak-47 but not a pack of cloves. here's the discourse. kind of amatuerish to post my personal stuff (i'm levi in the conversation, if it was a mystery), but it gets about ten people into the debate. our own double agent is present, as well.

AK-47's are a bit louder than cloves when comparing noise. Althought It would be diffacult to find an orrafice to be able to "fuck" it. *shrug* Potato gravy soup.

self defense when red dawn happens maybe, lol. if people want smoke then let them smoke. victimless crimes are just that. if i want to smoke something that harms my life then let me. if you don't then don't.

Casey Sherman
Casey Sherman at 12:20pm June 23
well i'll put it this way. ak's are a direct fire weapon (1st hand shooting)... but they are so shitty after about a mag of 30rds you have no idea where the bullets are going to end up thus it becomes an indirect fire weapon (or 2nd hand shooting)... but i still agree with levi... honestly i'm more worried about cloves killing me then then an ak...
Shea Michael Bramer
Shea Michael Bramer at 12:21pm June 23
I agree, but I register all of my weapons. If I kill my child with my gun the government will find out. If I smoke in front of my kid every day, or someone's pregnant wife, no one holds me accountable for eventually killing that child or the damage done. So my point is who has the right to say one is more evil than another?
Shea Michael Bramer

I think their reasoning was to take away as much that could influence youth to smoke as possible, and they're probably less likely to smoke crappy tasting cigaretes over flavored ones. They tried regulating it and people continued buying for underaged youth. Some people have to ruin it for everyone, lame right?

I did some research and the numbers between smoking and anything else -including drugs and alcohol- in the US are not even close (with regards to mortality rate). And to be honest it's a financial decision that will help us keep a Social Security-like program for you guys to retire. We spend 8% of medicaid/medicare on PRIVATE-party health ... Read Moreexpenditures (like my father's terminal cancer).

@Kyle: this is the first step to legalization of drugs because it shows a govnmt willingness to accept responsibility for the accessibility and healthfulness of a dangerous substance. The money that'll be going into research for tobacco is included in cross-drug studies so we will see a REALISTIC FDA report on marijuana.

I would suggest that everyone study up on the materials available and not make a knee jerk reaction to this law. I've been smoking for almost 20 years. 20 years. 20 YEARS! There is a reason that I support this. It's the right thing, I don't like all of it, but it's a good law.

As long as this is the case the federal government (which didn't get a settlement from the tobacco companies) is well within it's rights to tax the hell out of cigarettes. It's also an organized move to make producers be responsible for their product (that kills). what you're actually arguing is an approach for single payer health care. in the current model, i don't pay for anything but medicare, medicade and socail security, and those are taken out of my paycheck before i even see it. i'm not losing more then fractions of a penny when it comes down to it, so i'm not liable for the blame. if i was ... These are examples of government agencies/laws that prevent us from potentially damaging the rest of society. Shouldn’t … Read Morewe pass laws that prevent companies and individuals from damaging this country’s health physically and financially? Or better yet what about the kids toys with lead paint from china? Only a few kids got really sick, but they loved playing with the damned things… so that’s cool, I guess. I mean lead paint used to be very common on kids toys (and other household goods) for a few decades so we should just get used to it and ignore the medical science.
what you’re actually arguing is an approach for single payer health care. in the current model, i don’t pay for anything but medicare, medicade and socail security, and those are taken out of my paycheck before i even see it. i’m not losing more then fractions of a penny when it comes down to it, so i’m not liable for the blame. if i was … Read Moreresponsible for the health care of the nation as a tax payer, i’d be ok with this, but i’m not. remember mike huckabees plan for health care? legally required annual physicals, and if you don’t fit the body mass index by within five percent you get a tax hike? that is slavery.

menthols are left out intentionally. the "flavored" cigarettes banned were intended to prevent young smokers from starting with cloves or gundang garam kind of "tasty" blends, assuming that they'll start there then go on to wanting more nicotine and smoking stronger cigarettes, but i guess menthols aren't the gateway drug that vanilla exporta's are. as a menthol smoker, i'm pretty happy about this.

Funny how menthol isn't in on this... I noticed you hit a bit on the "fat tax". Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who know how to live our lives better then we do.

And this is just the beggining, just wait until they start to decide what food you can eat, that is or isn't good for you, or how about what vehicles you can buy, now that they own the automobile industry, because it is or isn't good for the environment, when they decide you are a domestic terrorist. just try to find a vehicle that will get you up into the mountains on roads that they haven't maintained for years because those kind of vehicles aren't good for the environment. Not to mention the fact that they aren't playing with the gas prices to see if you'll just pay'em. You won't be able to find a gallon of gas and one things for sure you can't plugg your little battery powered Obamamobile into some tree along side of a mountain trail.
