Post Bar News (from the left)

Seeing as how I just got off work and there were no updates today, I’ll jeopardize my chances of making it to class tomorrow in order to drop some knowledge on you sleepin’ fools.

In the most breaking news, an earthquake registering 5.5 on the Richter scale has struck Afghanistan. An unknown number of casualties have followed the earthquake, which was tailed by an after shock of 5.1. My hopes are that the US troops in Afghanistan will do the best they can to help the civilians, as I have little faith their own government will do much. Godspeed to those who can help.

In more middle east news, George Mitchell supports a two state solution in Israel. Mitchell (who happens to be a fellow Maniac, making him good in my book) met with Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, proposing new tactics to deal with Palestine. Netanyahu was somewhat less enthusiastic, saying;

“Israel expects the Palestinians to first recognize Israel as a Jewish state before talking about two states for two peoples.”

Life on Earth exists without light or oxygen.

The Obama administration will not pursue prosecution of American torturers. Be it using bugs or rationalizing “some pain” in the minds of the torturer as an acceptable turnout, President Obama has taken an unfortunately weak stance on the scars he claimed to heal. Lets go down the list of things this weeks memo’s have revealed; forcing men to go over a week with out sleep is fine, slamming them against walls is fine, waterboarding is fine, trapping them in a confinement cell with possibly dangerous bugs, you can’t tell them either way, is fine. Orders are orders, I suppose, but there are people responsible for these decisions, and thus far only Spain is even willing to address the situation.

Lastly, in what most certainly is a totally personal grudge, CBS puts Rockland Maine in the coolest small towns in America. Seriously? Rockland? How about we throw in Aspen and Olympia too. ”

“The quintessential Northeastern harbor town, on the sunny side of a renaissance.”

Really? Not Machias, which has semester at sea? Not Lewisville? Camden? Hope? This is what happens when you let a bunch of damned flatlanders write an article about Maine. Be quiet and go back to your Red Lobster. You’ll never know the difference.
