News Round Up 02/25/09

*James Ceaser at the Weekly Standard paraphrases Mark Twain in his latest piece, Alive and Kicking: Reports of Conservatism’s Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated.

Money Quote:

The end of conservative authors seek to create for themselves a neutral perch from which they can peer down and pronounce a priori objective judgments, calling, for example, a John Boehner or a Mitch McConnell an ideologue and a Nancy Pelosi or a Harry Reid a pragmatist. Pragmatism is the magic word to describe what liberals want, but do not want to argue for. It is at this point, as Burke might have said, that we enter “the fairy land of philosophy.”

*I hate to admit this, but Jhimmi Carter actually did something right.

*We’ll have a longer post and separate thread on President Obama’s speech later today (still reading through the transcript), but the WSJ is not impressed.  Even the Washington Post is skeptical, which tells you something.

*A new John Stossel Column: Judging Obama

*Obama’s approval rating at one month the same as Bush’s during the same sampling period (2/19 to 2/21), but already below Bush’s from 3/5 to 3/7 (63%).  Polling data is all from Gallup.

*Awkward: Former Klansman and longest serving Democrat Senator Robert Byrd (D-W.VA) is concerned that Obama is threatening the “the Constitutional system of checks and balances” by appointing czars to oversee health, urban affairs, and climate change.

*The New York Times: Your Taxes Are Going Up, Permanently.  No shit.  How else would we pay for all these unicorns and rainbows?

*Keep it classy MSDNC.  Olbermann Mathews utters “Oh God” before Governor Jindal (R-LA) even begins speaking.

Update: Given the reviews of Jindal’s speech, the “Oh God” would have fit well after he spoke.

“On detainees, on missing e-mails, even on a tax cut, President Obama is acting disturbingly like President Bush.”

*It could be an Onion headline but it’s not: Poodle Mauls Chihuahua at Park

*Your Daily Dose of Awesome: Gentleman’s club gets the nod in Grand Junction!

“The decision prompted applause, cheers and hugs in the back of the City Hall auditorium and outside in the hallway from club proponents.”
